<p>The article examines the evolution of the institution of palace commandants in the context of ensuring the security of the head of state in late imperial Russia. The regulatory and legal framework that governed the activities of this official is analysed, and the transformation of their powers under the influence of the political realities of the late 19th – early 20th century is examined. It is concluded that by the beginning of the 20th century, the figure of the palace commandant had acquired the characteristics of a key subject in the system of the emperor’s physical protection, which was due both to the growing complexity of terrorist threats and to the bureaucratisation of imperial administration.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>palace commandant</kwd><kwd>ensuring the emperor’s safety</kwd><kwd>political investigation</kwd><kwd>palace police</kwd><kwd>Ministry of the Imperial Court</kwd><kwd>emperor’s protection</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>дворцовый комендант</kwd><kwd>обеспечение безопасности императора</kwd><kwd>политический сыск</kwd><kwd>дворцовая полиция</kwd><kwd>Министерство императорского двора</kwd><kwd>охрана императора</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[1] Воейков В.Н. С царем и без царя.
