<p>The statutory requirement that forensic examination rest on a strictly scientific basis (Art. 8 of Federal Law No. 73-FZ) presupposes the verifiability not only of the procedures applied but also of the sources from which the underlying propositions are drawn. This paper describes a case in which that requirement was violated by both sides of a professional dispute simultaneously. In 2016 two documents of opposite orientation were published: a monograph on the forensic psychological assessment of statement credibility, with an appended expert opinion from a criminal case, and an information letter approved by the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Russian Federal Centre of Forensic Science (Ministry of Justice) and the Academic Council of the Serbsky Centre (Ministry of Health), declaring such examination inadmissible. Both documents are shown to rely on the same source — an unauthorised transcript of an oral practical seminar, published without the speaker's participation — and in both cases the status of that source went unverified. In the first, a teaching metaphor ("the Pinocchio syndrome") migrated from an oral lecture into the list of indicators used to assess the psycho-emotional state of a minor victim; in the second, the same text served as grounds for classifying the cited person as a "practitioner from the business community", an operation that constitutes a genetic fallacy. A separate section examines an internal contradiction of the methodology under review: the requirement of justifying the weight of each criterion, formulated by its own authors, is not met in their own expert opinion, where the final indicator is expressed as a percentage to one decimal place. A protocol of source verification is proposed, applicable both in the production of an expert opinion and in its review. The principal conclusion of the information letter — that statement credibility cannot be established by forensic examination — is shared by the author; what is criticised is not the conclusion but the manner in which it was obtained.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>forensic psychological examination</kwd><kwd>statement credibility</kwd><kwd>scientific validity</kwd><kwd>source criticism</kwd><kwd>textual criticism</kwd><kwd>authorised text</kwd><kwd>genetic fallacy</kwd><kwd>criterion weighting</kwd><kwd>spurious precision</kwd><kwd>profiling</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>судебно-психологическая экспертиза</kwd><kwd>достоверность показаний</kwd><kwd>научная обоснованность</kwd><kwd>источниковедение</kwd><kwd>текстология</kwd><kwd>авторизованный текст</kwd><kwd>генетическая ошибка</kwd><kwd>весовые коэффициенты</kwd><kwd>ложная точность</kwd><kwd>профайлинг</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[1] Енгалычев В. Н. — 2016. — № 3 (43). — C. 64-73.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref3"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[3] Томашевский Б. В. — 280 с.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref4"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[4] Лихачёв Д. С. — 639 с.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref5"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[5] Рейсер С. А. — 176 с.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref6"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[6] Спирица Е.В. — № 10. —2026. — С. 298-208.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref7"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[7] Mehrabian A., Ferris S. R. Inference of Attitudes from Nonverbal Communication in Two Channels // Journal of Consulting Psychology. — 1967. — Vol. 31, no. 3. — P. 248–252.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref8"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[8] Hirsch A. R., Wolf C. J. Practical Methods for Detecting Mendacity: A Case Study // Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. — 2001. — Vol. 29, no. 4. — P. 438–444.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref9"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[9] DePaulo B. M., Lindsay J. J., Malone B. E., Muhlenbruck L., Charlton K., Cooper H. Cues to Deception // Psychological Bulletin. — 2003. — Vol. 129, no. 1. — P. 74–118.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref10"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[10] Luke T. J. Lessons From Pinocchio: Cues to Deception May Be Highly Exaggerated // Perspectives on Psychological Science. — 2019. — Vol. 14, no. 4. — P. 646–671.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref11"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[11] Walton D. Ad Hominem Arguments. — Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press, 1998. — 336 p.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref12"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[12] Dawes R. M. The Robust Beauty of Improper Linear Models in Decision Making // American Psychologist. — 1979. — Vol. 34, no. 7. — P. 571–582.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref13"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[13] Bond C. F. Jr., DePaulo B. M. Accuracy of Deception Judgments // Personality and Social Psychology Review. — 2006. — Vol. 10, no. 3. — P. 214–234.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref14"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[14] Wiseman R., Watt C., ten Brinke L., Porter S., Couper S.-L., Rankin C. The Eyes Don't Have It: Lie Detection and Neuro-Linguistic Programming // PLoS ONE. — 2012. — Vol. 7, no. 7. — e40259.</mixed-citation></ref><ref id="ref15"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">[15] Выготский Л. С.
