<p>This paper analyzes the phenomenon whereby a psychiatric diagnosis within a penitentiary setting transforms from a tool for describing suffering into an instrument of survival, social communication, or implicit coercion. Drawing on J. Baudrillard’s philosophy of the simulacrum, K. Jaspers’ existential psychopathology, and the principles of anti-psychiatry (R.D. Laing), the study substantiates the thesis that a special nosological discourse emerges within a closed institutional environment. It is demonstrated that the existential vacuum generated by isolation and the destruction of temporal perspective creates conditions for substituting genuine mental suffering with itssymbolic imitation – an imitation that proves more «advantageous» within the logic of institutional interaction. A distinction is drawn between the phenomenon of despair as a mode of being-in-theworld and a clinically delineated disorder, a boundary that inevitably blurs under conditions of unfreedom due to the pressure of external (regime) and internal (adaptation) factors. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity of phenomenological rigor in diagnostics, allowing one to distinguish existential communication from role-playing behavior dictated by the logic of the total institution</p>
